雅思地道短语一:Not giving two hoots 无所谓

Not giving two hoots 是一个较为随便的短语,意思是你对什么事儿根本不在乎,与己无关。

例句

I don't give two hoots about having money, as long as I'm happy.

My girlfriend doesn't give two hoots about my career. She didn't even ask how my interview went.

雅思地道短语二:Fired up 点燃了

当某人is 或 becomes fired up, 这就意味着这个人对某件事情充满热情和期待。但也可能意味着某人很生气。

例句

I've managed to get hold of some tickets for the final and the thought of watching it in person has really got me fired up.

I was talking to someone about politics and we got really fired up and started shouting at each other.

注意点:别把 to get fired up 和 to fire away (at someone) 这两个短语给混淆了。当某人 fires away (at someone) 意思是某人向其他人提出很多问题。

雅思地道短语三:On the ball 机灵

如果形容一个人是 on the ball, 那就意味着这个人非常机灵。

例句

Brian managed to learn the new college computer system in just a couple of hours. He's really on the ball.

You have to be on the ball to win on that TV quiz show. You only have half a second to answer the questions.

注意点:如果形容某件事是 a whole new ball game, 那就意味着这是与以往不同的一种全新的事物。

雅思地道短语四:Eclipse something 超越于

如果说你 eclipse 什么东西,那就意味着你超越了或优胜于什么。

例句

She got the job because her interview eclipsed all of the others.

That's the best goal he's ever scored: it eclipses all the rest.

This has been such a great day; nothing can eclipse it.

注意点:另一个英语单词 overshadow 意思是使失色,比如说 A is overshadowed by B, 这句话的意思就是 B 夺去了A 的光彩。换句话说,A 被 B 比下来了,不再那么重要了。

雅思地道短语五:To weather the storm 闯过难关

短语 "to weather the storm" 意思是经历一个困难时期,类似汉语里我们说的闯过难关。

例句

The company weathered the storm through the recession and is now very successful.

Times are tough right now, but you just need to weather the storm for a while and things will get better.

注意点:英语里还有一个类似的表达 "to ride out the storm" 意思也是度过难关。

雅思地道短语六:Head over heels 完全的

Head over heels 这个短语往往被用来形容完全陷入爱情的感觉。

例句

I'm head over heels in love with my new boyfriend – he's wonderful.

I think they'll get married soon - he's fallen head over heels for that girl.

注意点:如果你对某件事情的态度被形容为 digging your heels, 意思就是你的态度非常坚决,不会妥协。
  
I said I didn't want to go on a beach holiday, but she dug her heels in about it, so I gave in.

雅思地道短语七:Crowning glory 至高荣耀

如果形容某事是 a tall order 那么就意味着这是一项非常艰巨的任务。

例句

Zinedine Zidane was a wonderful footballer. His crowning glory was scoring twice when France won the World Cup.

The crowning glory of the Sistine Chapel is its painted ceiling.

There are many interesting places to visit in China, but for most the Great Wall is the crowning glory.

注意点:如果某人 glory in something, 那么意思就是他非常喜欢某件事情或为这件事情感到自豪。

雅思地道短语八:To be snookered 被骗了

如果你被 snookered, 意思就是你被骗了。

例句

I was snookered by a fake internet company – I paid one hundred pounds for a handbag but never received anything!

This email says I will receive ten thousand pounds if I hand over my bank details – do you think someone's trying to snooker me?

注意点:如果你 pot shot 某人,意思就是批评某人,尤其是在这个人已经成为大家的抨击对象时。
