第一段：南极洲寒冷危险，以前的南极洲是距离日常生活遥远的地方。

第二段：21世纪，人们对南极洲的观念改变。虽然位置依然遥远，但是大家已经认识到南极洲及周围的海域是地球生态系统的不可或缺的一部分。因为科学研究发现，南极洲对全球的气候和海洋环流都有很大影响。

南极洲并非总是很冷，南极洲周围环绕着南极绕极流(ACC)，在它的影响下，盛行的西风从西向东流动，关于重力风(katabatic wind)，制造风冷却效果。

极端环境对全球的影响，海洋的温度可以预测澳洲的降雨，通过更为准确的预测，昆士兰北部的放牧人就可以避免在干旱的年份过度放牧，这样就可以防止草场退化。

海洋表面温度取决于深水温度，空气温度和冰之间的相互作用。南极有一种磷虾，是很多动物的食物，当海冰充裕，食物充裕，生长良好;海冰减少，磷虾生长不好，很多动物就需要迁徙。

世界海洋洋流循环系统把水和溶解的矿物质，还有营养，从一个半球输送到另一个半球，从海洋深处运送到海洋表面。ACC就是世界上最长最大的洋流，对全球的洋流都有重大影响。新鲜的水才能冻结成海冰，残留的水变得咸度和密度都越来越高，冷水比热水携带更多的氧气，各大洋的活力应该归功于南极。
