大家在托福写作时候往往不会太在意,但看的人,比如:老板、考官,则会开启“大家来找茬”模式,把你句子中拼错、搞混的单词一个一个揪出来。所以,与其被他人“找茬”,不如自己先来看看有哪些词是容易混淆,并在写作中多加注意咯。

abroad vs. aboard

Abroad means “in or to a foreign country”.

例:She often goes abroad on business.

Aboard means “on or onto a ship, plane, or train”.

例:They finally went aboard the plane.

accept vs. except

Accept means "to take willingly".

例:Miss Deeds accepted the cup of hot tea even without a saucer.

Except is a preposition meaning "excluding".

例:Everyone was disappointed with the party except Ida Goodtime.

advice vs. advise

Advice is a noun meaning "an opinion given with the intention of helping".

例:My mother still gives me advice even though I'm 40 years old.

Advise is a verb meaning "to give counsel or advice".

例:The meteorologist advised listeners to stay indoors because of the extremely cold temperatures.

appraise vs. apprise

Appraise means "to assess or estimate the worth of".

例:The jeweler appraise a diamond at $5000.

Apprise means "to inform or notify".

例:the officer apprised us of our rights.

affect vs. effect

Affect is most often used as a verb meaning "to influence and change".

例:The president's speech affected his views of the upcoming election.

Effect, as verb, means "to cause".

例:Batting her eyes so flirtatiously effected a strong desire in Rathbone to embrace Mirabelle.

ensure vs. insure

Ensure means "to make sure by double checking".

例:The custodian ensured the doors to the school were locked at night.

Insure means "to provide insurance".

例:It is wise to insure your house against flood, fire, or theft. (Insurance may be assurance outside the US.)

beside vs. besides

Beside means "next to".

例:Place the dishes beside the sink.

Besides is an adverb or preposition that means "also, additionally".

例:I would enjoy going on a vacation besides working all the time.

belief vs. believe

Belief is a noun.

例:He had strong beliefs.

Believe is a verb.

例:She believes she can do anything.

brake vs. break

Brake means "to stop".

例:You should brake slowly on ice.

Break means "to smash".

例:To break a mirror brings seven years of worse luck than you are having now.

breath vs. breathe

Breath is a noun meaning "the air pulled into the lungs".

例:Take a deep breath and relax.

Breathe, with an E on the end, is a verb.

例:Just breathe deeply and calm down.
