The chart compares variations in the number of international travelers in differentregions in the years of 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005.

Itis clear that the total number of international travelers increased over the15years. From 1990to 1995, all the areas experienced a more significant increase, butduring the following years, the growth rate of overseas travel population becameslower.

Accordingto the statistics, Europeans were the most enthusiastic about travelling abroad, with the highestfigure in each year and reached a peak at around 400 million in 2005.Conversely, Middle East had the least tourists who were willing to go overseas, with less than 20 million in the whole period.

Other regions, including Africa, America, Asia and the Pacific,presented a similar increasing tendencyof international travel population from 1990 to 2005. By contrast, America experienced a distinct trend from the former regions. Between 1990 and1995, its touristsincreased from 112.5 to 118.2 million, but the data dropped slightlyto 113.2 million.

With the rapid urban sprawlof human society, treeshave becomemore significant than ever before. Alarge number ofpeople call for more vegetation in open areas in towns and cities rather than morebuildings. I am in favor of their viewpoint because its benefits outweigh drawbacks.

Trees are an integralpart of the urban ecosystem and a cityhaving easier access to green spaceis more livable and attractive for residents. Firstly, green plants can photosynthesize to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, thus improving the airquality in cities and relievinghuman respiratory diseasescaused by smog and fumes.Secondly,trees have the functions of checking winds, fixing drifting sand, and conserving water and soil. Thirdly, traffic noisewill be significantlyreduced by planting trees. Finally, city dwellers will have moreopportunities to reduce stress, as green surroundings are more suitable for people to let off steam.

Although housing guarantees people’s demandfor accommodation, currentlya great many real estate developersexploit the open areas to makea huge profit, which occupies the finitelandresources. Furthermore, thehousing industry and market aresosaturatedthat there is hardly any urgent need tobuild more housing. Even if there were not enough accommodation, housing developers could use advanced construction technology to design high-rise buildings to meet residential needs and save open areas for greenery. After all, green space should not be sacrificed for the “housing bubble”.

To sum up, I believe that cultivating more trees in open areas will be more beneficial to sustainable development than constructing property in towns and cities.
