SAT阅读难点之：一词多义

举个例子：

在OG Test 5中的一篇fiction中有一句话是描述男主人公走路的姿态：
　　“He moved deliberately, negotiating the crush while humming a tricky passage from Schumann.”
　　在这短短的一句话中有四个单词在这里都用到了它们的secondary或者tertiary meaning

1）deliberate
　　deliberate最常用的意思是“故意的”e.g. He cheated me deliberately. (他故意欺骗我。)同时，作为verb，deliberate表示“仔细思索”e.g. The jury deliberated for four days before acquitting him. 而在这里，用的是deliberate的第三种意思，“从容的”(deliberate speech, thought, or movement is slow and careful)。“他从容地走着，移动着”

2）negotiate
　　negotiate最常用的意思是“协商”e.g. The government refuses to negotiate with the terrorists. 这里表示“越过，穿过”（to successfully travel through, around, or over an obstacle or terrain）。对于英文阅读量不大的考生，negotiate的这个意思一定很陌生。

3）crush
　　crush这个小词的意思相当多，而且每个意思用到的频率都很高。
　　作为verb，有“挤压”的意思。e.g. Two people were crushed to death in the rush to escape.
　　此外，还有“压碎”的意思。e.g.crush the glass/garlic
　　作为noun (单数)，crush 表示“挤压的人群”(a crowd of people pressed so close together that it is difficult for them to move) 。在本句中，就是“人群”的意思，e.g. There’s always such a crush on the train in the mornings.
　　当然，有的考生马上就问了，在美剧里经常听到“I have a huge crush on him.”这里的crush表示“对某人强烈的好感”(a strong feeling of romantic love for sb.)

4）passage
　　最初学英语时候，就会见到这个词表示“段落”。后来发现这个单词的几个意思之间的差别还是很大的，比如“With the passage of time, things began to look more hopeful.” 这里 the passage of time是一个固定搭配，表示“时间的流逝”。
　　另外，“The policy forced a passage through the crowd.” passage 还有“通道”的意思“a way through something“。再来看，passage还有“走廊”的意思，等于corridor。

讲解了以上四个词语的其他意思，考生们是否觉得SAT阅读中生单词的障碍并不是最大的，因为只要你去背了这些貌似很长的词汇，你就能理解句子。但是熟词生义是真正阻碍考生们准确理解句子的原因。所以在平时的学习中一定要注意对这些词汇的积累，勤查英英字典并且把碰到过的意思都记录在word档案或者本子中，摘抄时一定要将原句一起记录，这样印象才会深刻。久而久之，自己对单词的理解才会准确和迅速，在阅读文章的时候流畅度就会提高，而阅读的流畅度是促进我们理解的关键因素。
