Speaking

Task 1

If you are about to make a donation to a community, which one would you prefer? City library, animal rescue center or environmental organization?

Sample answer

I would like to donate my money to the city library.

To my knowledge, the library in my community is pretty small with limited book collections. As a bookworm who always spends most of time in library, I deeply believe that a good library will be a paradise for the readers. I think the funds will allow the library to purchase more books and create a better reading environment.

Moreover, after a long time reading, I am more likely to grad a cup of coffee and take some time off from reading to refresh myself. If more money is donated, I hope to further construct the utilities and better the service provided. For example, a café can be built to serve as a place for readers to relax.

Task 2

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: students should do part-time jobs before they enter college.

Sample answer

I agree with the idea that students should do part-time jobs before they enter college.

For a start, most students have been studying in school for a long time before they enter college. Doing some part-time jobs will allow them to experience something different and something that they can never learn from school. For example, they can learn about how hard it is to earn money, so that they won’t spend money carelessly in the future.

Secondly, it always feels good to earn money by yourself. When they earn money for the first time through their own effort, it will give them a huge sense of accomplishment, and this will possibly encourage them to live independently at an earlier age. Such experience should enrich the life experience of students and make their pre-college life more meaningful.

Task 3

Reading

A student proposes that the psychology department should create a student's magazine

1) to show the students their hard work put into papers and study

Listening

The female student agrees with the proposal.

The woman in the conversation agrees with this proposal for two reasons.

First, all psychology majors will go to graduate school, so having a paper published will show their outstanding academic background and also be good for their future career.

Second, it can also provide a model for paper writing for new students studying psychology. They will learn the structure.

譬如说，教授的弟弟在大学里教书，换了校长，一开始他认为新校长肯定不好，但后来校长做了很多好事，他又喜欢校长了，并且不承认以前不喜欢校长。

Sample answer

Consistency bias means that people incorrectly remember their past attitudes and behavior as resembling present attitudes and behavior. For example, the professor's brother teaches math at a university. He didn't like the new principle at first. Then the principle did some changing such as equipping the classrooms with computer, which made him think positively about the principle. And when told that he hadn't likely the principle before, he was surprised and said he didn't remember ever saying it.

Task 5

Listening

Problem: the girl doesn't have an umbrella but she needs to go home to get the book for her history paper due the next day.

Solution 1:

等朋友一起回去，但是要等

Solution 2:

打车回去要十五美元

Sample answer

The girl's problem is that it's raining outside and she doesn't have an umbrella but she needs to go home to get the book for her history paper due the next day.

There are two possible solutions for her.

The first solution is that her roommate can give her a ride.

The second solution is she can take a taxi home.

If I were the woman, I would prefer the second solution. If she wanted to get a ride from her roommate, she would have to wait because her roommate has classes the whole afternoon. After that, she will need to work on the paper till late night. Even though taking a taxi will cost her about fifteen dollars, I believe that will be worthy. If she was lucky out, she may get someone who goes to the same place to share the fee.

Task 6

Listening

Topic: two ways animals store their food in winter

Point 1: to dry it out, or remove the moisture from the food

Example1 : squirrels dry out their mushroom on tree branches.

Point 2: to keep the food cold

Example 2: beavers put tree branches underwater to keep them cold, so that they can eat fresh tree branches.

Sample answer

The professor talks about two ways animals store their food in winter.

The first is to dry it out, or remove the moisture from the food, because bacteria need moisture to survive, making the food go bad. For example, squirrels dry out their mushroom on tree branches.

The second is to keep the food cold because bacteria can't make food go bad in cold environment. For example, beavers put tree branches underwater to keep them cold, so that they can eat fresh tree branches.
