词汇量对托福阅读究竟有多重要？

准考生在接触一门考试前最爱问的问题是：老师我要是去参加这门考试至少要有多少单词？可见考生们或多或少在潜意识中将单词量作为衡量一门出国考试水平的核心标准或者说重要标准。那么单词量在出国考试的阅读部分到底占有多么重要的位置呢？

我们来看一道托福原题：

It should be obvious that cetaceans -whales, porpoises, and dolphins -are mammals. They breathe through lungs , not through gills, and give birth to live young.Their streamlined bodies,the presence of a fluke and blowhole can not disguise their affinities with land dwelling mammals.However,unlike the cases of sea otters and pinnipeds, it is not easy to envision what the first whales looked like.

Which of the following can be inferred from paragraph 1 about early sea otters?
A.it is not difficult to imagine what they looked like
B.there were great numbers of them.
C.they lived in the sea only.
D.they did not leave many fossil remains.

首先我们先假设你是一个普通高中生，也就是你的单词量在4000左右，优秀高中生的单词量可能大约在不到5000，那么在这段以自然科学类为背景的文章中，有相当一部分的词我们是不认识的，那我们能否做对题目呢？  以我们现有的能力，是通过语法基础先提取出主干：Cetaceans -whales......their streamlined bodies...dwelling mammals.However,unlike the cases of sea otters....it is not easy to envision what the first whales looked like.

然后我们压缩主干找出这段想表达的逻辑： cetaceans与sea otters这两个东西的比较，比较的是什么呢， 首先请大家注意however,和unlike这种表示逻辑的词，证明比较的这两个东西是不同的，再看文中指出是cetaceans 是not easy to envision ....looked like，因此推断出sea otters 是easy to envision, 换句话就是not difficult to envision， 初步判断为A选项，那如果你知道vis这个词根是看的意思，不难想象envision和imagine 应该是同义词，更确定为A。OK,到此为止题目答完。 大家是否有些感悟？

因此单词当然是阅读部分中重要的一个环节，但是如果无法准确的抽离主干，我们就不可能打对此题，即便单词的意思你都了解。由此可见，语法也是非常重要甚至说更重要的一个方面。更多的讲解，将会在后面一一呈现给大家。
