Among all the flowers I love, garden roses are always my dearest. I started to know this kind of beautiful creatures when I was only three years old. At that time, I lived with my grandparents. They had a garden, a fairly small one, of about 10 square meters, where they planted 15 different cultivars of garden roses. I can still remember clearly the scene in summer: some of the roses were clinging to the wall while some others were just leaning against the fences. And quite often sparrows and swallows came and sat on the shrubs, singing. And it was never difficult for me to catch butterflies and ladybirds standing on the buds.
Well most people may take it for granted that all roses just share the name ‘roses’, and that they just look similar except that they may show different yet limited kinds of colors. But In fact, there are hundreds of them and each has its own name and characteristics. For example, “tea”, is the name for those with yellow or apricot blossoms. And these climbing flowers get the name for their slight fragrance of tea. And while ‘Alba’ carries with their shrubs white blossoms, ‘Galicca’ flowers in maroon and crimson. Others include Damascus, Bourbon, hybrid musk, floribunda, grandiflora, etc., all with unique hues and scents. Another fact about the garden roses is that, though in the past they only survived in mild climate, after years of hybridization, now we can enjoy the beauty of them in most part of the world.
