I’d like to share with you how I completed my dissertation 6 years ago. This individual work was assigned in late May, 2008 and the deadline was in Sep. 1 the same year. In the three months I had to finish writing a research-based 20000w paper. I immediately made a plan. I would conduct my survey in the first month; and I would spend the second month reading; and the in the last month I would finish writing based on the result of the survey and the review of literature. And I just started my work. The first thing I did was to complete the survey. I designed a questionnaire and sent it out. When I collected them, however, I found that of all the people who responded, only 3 of them were male, while 103 of the others were female. But since one of the objectives of my research was ‘to compare the needs of learning academic English between males and females’ I really didn’t think the mere 3 sheets of men would be enough.
As a result, I had to issue the questionnaires again. Fortunately, I was able to get 50 responses for the second time. Then it came to the technical part. Since the questionnaire I designed was a Likert scale, I needed to analyze it with a particular mathematical model. Luckily a computer program for this was available. And it took no more than 3 days for me to make it. And then, 20 days later, I finished all the reading. Then I began writing. The result of my data analysis, together with the literature review, provided me exciting findings. And I kept writing for 10 days, during which I didn’t go out of my flat room, in case I would forget any ideas. And when I finish writing my dissertation, actually I was 20 days ahead of schedule! But I didn’t submit it at once for I still needed proofreading for it. On 31st, August, I submitted my paper, one day ahead of the deadline.
