Task 1
Reading
飞机的第一个发明者不是Whitehead
1)对于第一架飞机的印象是来源于画像,没有照片,是记者们编的。
2)第一架飞机飞不起来,因为设计的机翼只有一个。
3)飞机的引擎不好用。他把发动机卖给飞机制造者结果都没飞成功。
Listening
飞机的第一个发明者是Whitehead
Sample answer
The reading and listening discuss whether Whitehead invented the first airplane. The passage mentions three reasons to point out that the first aircraft was not created by Whitehead. Whereas, the professor totally refutes the three points presented in the passage.
First, the professor rebuts the reading’s idea that Whitehead was not the inventor because there is no photo of the airplane. The professor claims that the technology was not advanced enough and there was no photography, instead they had to keep record by pictures. More importantly, the aircraft flied at such a high speed that it could not be taken the photo of. Meanwhile, he always tested his plane in the morning when it was quite dim and the sight was not clear.
Furthermore, the professor contradicts reading’s statement that the aircraft could not take off as there was only one wing. The professor mentions that it could in fact fly. The scientists have done four experiments successfully with the same design diagram.
Finally, the passage states that Whitehead’s engines are not good enough because the planes could not fly successfully when the airplane builders bought them. However, the professor explains that it was not Whitehead’s fault. At that time the technology was not advanced enough, and the airplane builders did not know much about the design. If his engines were sold, it suggested that there was nothing wrong with the design. And actually the engines were quite good.
Task 2
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: It is often not a good idea to move to a new city or a new country because you will lose old friends. Agree or disagree?
Sample answer
In today’s fast changing society, it has become a quite common trend that people move from one place to another in pursuit of their own goals. Some may worry that changing the living environment will bring some negative effects like losing old friends, so it is not a good idea to move. However, from my perspective, moving to a new place has for more advantages and there is no problem in keeping old friendships.
To begin with, the means of modern day communication has greatly facilitates the way we keep in touch with our friends. As we can see, today all kinds of social net-working platforms spring up continuously, like Facebook, WeChat, Twitter and so on. Through these approaches, not only can we keep in touch with our friends even when we are in different cities or countries, but also we are able to know about their experiences and feelings by what they share on these platforms. Whenever we want to talk to our friends, we can manage it. In this way, maintaining friendship is no longer difficult and there is no need to worry about losing friends just because of the distance. For example, I have some friends who have gone overseas. Though we have fewer chances to meet each other now, still our relationship remains the same way, or even closer as we miss each other more. We usually make video calls with the phone, and we are clear what
each other is going through. Thanks to the communication tools, we are able to contact with our friends wherever they are.
Furthermore, by moving to a new place, we have more chances to experience a new life. If a person just stay at the same old place, it is more likely that he is only used to just a certain kind of living environment, the same culture and a limited social circle. By contrast, moving to a new city or a new country enables him to broaden his horizons by experiencing a totally different lifestyle. Specifically, he or her has to get adjust to different customs, meet the local people, expand the social circle and so on. He can surely feel the local scenery in person and get the first -hand information about a place. All these will undoubtedly enrich one’s life experience and gives him a kind of brand new feeling. Instead of living the same way, moving in fact provides us with more harvest of life.
In conclusion, changing the living place to another city or country is by no means a bad choice. For one thing, there is no worry about losing old friends with modern day communication tools; for another, we can acquire new experiences and enrich our life by doing this.
