Fossil fuels are the main resource in many countries, but in some countries the use of alternative resources of energy are encouraged. Is it a positive or negative development?

　　带来好处：
　　1.Fossil fuels do not have large amount of reserves already to support the sustainable development of human society.
　　2.Fossil fuels trigger severe environment issues, e,g, the emission of carbon dioxide forms greenhouse effect and causes the rising sea level (some countries and regions will largely be flooded)
　　3.In contrast, many new resources, e.g. solar energy and nuclear energy are clean and eco-friendly, since they produce no greenhouse gases. Besides, these resources are normally abundant in quantity.

　　支持带来的坏处
　　1．Many countries cannot afford the exploitation of new resources, due to the huge cost, e.g. nuclear energy plants.
　　2．Many facilities of human society are made to burn gasoline and coal. Therefore, updating them means astronomical expenses.
　　3．Some alternative resources are either not easily accessible, e.g. windy power, or unstable, e.g. nuclear power, which can result into disastrous leak, e.g. the destruction of nuclear power plant in Japan.
Children’s education is expensive. In some countries, the government pays some or all of the costs. Do the advantages outweigh its disadvantages?

　　1.Education is of pivotal meaning to both individuals and the society.
　　2.The government can thus benefit from paying for children’s studies. It is a rewarding investment, since well-educated students will grow up as qualified workers and researchers for the society.
　　3.However, this policy contains the minor risk that it may put people off working hard, since whatever contribution they make, their children are assured of well-rounded education.

　　It is important for all towns and cities to have large public outdoor places like squares and parks. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

　　1.The outdoor sites built for public purposes are of necessity to urban life, because a wide range of activities takes place in there.

Children can learn effectively from watching television. Therefore children should be encouraged to watch television regularly both at home and at school. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

　　1.The wide variety of TV programmes provide knowledge for students, often in an intriguing and thought-provoking way.
　　2.But allowing children to constantly watching television will yield more risks than benefits. At home, particularly when parents are not around, children, due to the lack of self-control, can spend excessive amount of time on TV and lose sight of the importance of homework.

Some people believe that if a police force carries guns, it will encourage the level of violence in the society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

　　Whether a police force is equipped with guns or not will not necessarily affect the level of violence in a society.
　　1.Those who are in favor of this assumption would argue that the existence of weapons encourages violence, since when a police officer fires a gun, it would cause lawbreakers to fight back, or in some cases, innocent pedestrains might be held as hostages. Nevertheless, they neglect the fact that well armed police force is powerful deterrence to outlaws.
　　2.Observing from a wider perspective, we can find that even if a police force is disarmed, it will not automatically lead to increasing violence.

Some people think that adults should learn practical skills (e.g. computer skills) by themselves. But others think that learning from a teacher in a classroom is better. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

　　Those who believe that people should learn practical techniques from teachers in a classroom argue that teachers can show them a clear learning path, with which they can make improvements without hesitating in deciding where to start.
　　1.While teachers’ role is extensively valued, people’s self-incentive also plays a significant part.
　　2.Learning is not mutually independent. Without teachers’ timely guidance, students would easily go astray and end up doing worthless works. Without students’ active thinking, a teacher cannot take them anywhere demanding but feel frustrated.
Economic progress is often used to measure a country's success. However, some people believe that other factors are more important. What other factors should also be considered when measuring a country's success? Do you think one factor is more important than others?

　　1.Standards of education, health and individual human rights should certainly be considered when measuring a country’s status.

Some people who have been in prison become good citizens later. Some people think that they are the best people to talk to school students about the danger of committing a crime. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

　　1.After spending some time in the prison, some criminals would regret their misdeeds, being aware of the consequences of offences, including the harm done to the victims and the strict punishment for criminals.
　　2.In fact, the police are a better choice for educating students of the major consequences of crimes. As the defenders of the society, they can naturally win trust from people.
　　It has been suggested that all young adults should be required to undertake a period of unpaid work helping people in the community. Does it bring more benefits or drawbacks to the community and young people?

　　Drawbacks outweigh advantages.
　　1.The positive side of requiring all young people to do free work for people in the community is obvious.
　　2.However, when people are in their twenties or thirties, most of them have just started their careers.
　　3.In addition, it is important to note that not every young adult is competent for providing help. Nowadays, a good many young people are quite spoiled.
