Being successful is a dream that drives everyone to devote their whole heart to pursuing it. What factors determine a person’s success in life and career has intrigued human curiosity for thousands of years, and there has been no consensus on it yet. Some people insist that in order to succeed, individuals should be more like others. However, as far as I am concerned, being different from others is more essential. This can be illustrated by the following reasons.

The first reason to support my view is that being different makes it possible for people to stand out and then to grasp more opportunities. This is because as an old Chinese saying goes: “the rarer it is, the more it is worth”. Uniqueness is a way to make a person and a commodity more attractive and precious than others. This is especially important when people hunt for a job in this highly competitive job market. The job-seekers who possess different qualities are easier to catch employers’ attention and make deep first impressions, which further ensures their success in obtaining the positions. In addition, in the career, the person who is more creative and different in thinking patterns is easier to get promotion. A typical illustration of this can be seen from a job-seeking program: Only You. In the most cases, the candidates showing off their eye-catching specialties are more welcome by judges and audience.

Furthermore, being different from others offers people a chance to make breakthroughs in the competition and then get achievements. For the same type of goods, only higher quality or more unique functions can be sold better and occupy the market. Take the Apple for example. When other computers produced by competitors are pursuing the comprehensive functions, the Apple Corporation has paid its attention to the easy operation, including better computer interface, its unique software system and incomparable stability. This is why the Apple has billions of fans and takes the leading position in the field of digital devices. Therefore, it is unsurprised to discover that many companies regard the creation as their fundamental living principle.
 
On the other hand, I have to concede that it is not unnecessary for people being like others in efforts to survive and succeed. This is because following suit is an essential and indispensable way for beginners who must maintain the compulsory capabilities and knowledge that are required in the certain field. Only on this base are innovation and revolution meaningful, as the foundation of every high building must have the same standard: firmness. However, this process only can be regarded as laying a foundation. In fact, what an artistic architecture really attracts attention is the distinct design and decoration. Individuals, companies and architectures share the same truth. Therefore, knowing others while maintaining one’s uniqueness helps enhance one’s chances to win.

In a world, the pursuit of uniqueness is found in all individuals who dream of accomplishing success. Without doubt, in today’s increasingly competitive social environment, no one wishes to be similar to others. Although, it is still imperative for people to learn from others, in order to stand out and make breakthroughs, being different is more crucial.
