Usage #1 作为“will”和“can”的过去式。

“Would” is the past tense of “will”, and “could” is the past tense of “can”
this only works of the appropriate part of the sentence is in the past.

例如:According to his most recent advertisement. Mookie the Bookie can predict with 100% accuracy which teams will win next week’s games.
In October 2, 1982, advertisement declared that Mookie the Bookie could predict with 100% accuracy which teams would win next week’s games.

Usage #2 用于非事实的假设性的情况,既虚拟语气。

“Would” and “could” are used to describe hypothetical situations that are not true.
例如:
If I had one million dollars. I could buy 800000 hamburgers at the gas station.
If I had one million dollars. I would donate 800000 hamburgers to country food bank.
If you want more information HYPOTHETICAL SUBJUNCTIVE
If I WERE a millionaire, I would donate ….

补充一个常见的迷惑点,很多学生分不清especially和specially。

especially & specially

*“especially” means “to a greater extent than others”
   This chemical is ESPECIALLY dangerous because it can methylate molecules in your body.
*“specially” means “in a special way”
   The food had to be specially prepared for the guests with unusual allergies.

例题:
Sulfur dioxide, a major contributor to acid rain, is an especially serious pollutant because it diminishes the respiratory system's ability to deal with all other pollutants.
