  “通过电视/电影作品,了解其他国家的文化”是雅思/托福写作中的常见话题。外媒也通过我国的影视作品看中国文化和政治。继《延禧攻略》和《流浪地球》之后,热播剧《都挺好》(All is Well)成为《经济学人》的中国板块的话题。

  Conflicted Confucians(n.

  A hit show questions blind obedience(n. 服从;顺从)to unreasonable(adj.

It is no mean feat(绝非易事) to be one of the top-ten trending hashtags(n. 标签) on Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter(插入语,解释“微博”等同于twitter), for 20 consecutive(adj. 连续的)days and counting. “All is Well”, a show on provincial television(卫视) which premiered(v.初次演出) on March 1st, has done just that. The show tells the story of a fictional(adj. 虚构的)Chinese family torn by internal conflict. The female protagonist(n. 主角), Su Mingyu, is barely on speaking terms (关系好)with her widowed(vt. 使丧偶) father and one of her two brothers. The father is a nagging crank(爱抱怨/纠缠不休的怪人) who expects his two adult sons to bankroll(v. This leads to constant bickering(n. 口角) between the brothers, neither of whom(定从,修饰brothers) wants to be called unfilial(adj.

Episodes((连续剧)一集) of “All is Well” have been streamed more than 390m times. That exceeds(vi. 领先) the online viewership of the next most popular television series by 278m. From “The Simpsons”(美国《辛普森一家》)to “Game of Thrones”(《权力的游戏》), dramas about bickering families are common in many countries. But in China, the Communist Party prefers entertainment to be unchallenging. So the questioning of blind attachment to traditional values in “All is Well” is causing a stir(n. Viewers are transfixed(vt. 刺穿)by its rare portrayal of middle-class life, warts and all.

Many Chinese can relate to the Su family’s troubles. The daughter holds a grudge against(怀恨)her father, and especially against her late mother, for(表示“原因”) having mistreated(v. 虐待) her while pampering(v. As a child she was made to wash(sb. is made to do sth.) her brothers’ clothes. Her parents turned a blind eye(视而不见)when one of her brothers beat her. For many female viewers born before 1979, when China introduced a onechild-per-couple policy(一孩政策) (changed to two in 2016), such scenes have brought back painful memories. Some have used social media to share their own tales of sexism within the family.

  To be continued…
