Social Learning

 

One way people learn is by watching the behavior of others. Sometimes called social learning, this type of learning involves the process of learning to copy—or not copy—the action of another. By observing the results, or consequences of another's behavior, people learn, over time, to either imitate or avoid imitating that behavior. In general, people tend to imitate the behavior of another when they see that it leads to a desirable consequence — hoping to repeat it for themselves. Of course, the opposite is also true—people tend to avoid imitating the behavior of another when they see it result in an undesirable consequence. 

 

Use the examples from the lecture to explain the concept of social learning. 

 

解题策略:

 

Step 1:

 

1.速读文章,找出其中的核心词,以及对这个词的definition (可快速抄写)

 

2.分析后面的内容,对教授后面说的lecture 的结构和内容做合理的预测和推断 如: 看到“either imitate or avoid imitating that behavior.”和“opposite” 的时候,可推断后面的lecture 很可能说关于‘imitate’ and “avoid”的两个例子/情况。

 

Step 2: 

 

仔细听lecture(只放一遍)记下来professor提出的要点以及细节点,理清逻辑关系与lecture的整体结构

 

听力笔记:

 

1.Prof. - two kids-as e.g.

 

2.Sister & brother -shop with mom

 

3.Girl wanna buy a toy-- mother says no-- she screams and cries

 

4.mom gives in-->buys toy--- little boy is watching all this

 

5.Next time if the boy wants sth.-- he will also cry and scream-- imitates the behavior from the girl.

 

6.If the mom didn’t buy in and didn’t buy the toy-- the boy won’t imitate the behavior since it did not lead to a desirable consequence.

 

评论:

 

A. 1-5 其实是按一条主线叙事,阐述一种情况, 6是一种对比阐述,在阐述另一种情况。

 

B. Lecture 里面的要点很多,而且要点之间存在逻辑关系,缺少其中的某些要点会造成对整体lecture的理解,所以要尽量多记多想,力求完全理解lecture的核心思路。

 

C. 力练习求读出笔记的能力

 

Sample Answer:

 

The lecture is mainly about social learning, which means a way people learn by watching the behavior of others. The professor explains this concept by giving an example of two kids. When two kids shop with their mother, the girl wants to buy a toy but the mother refuses her demand: she says no. And the little girl starts to scream and cry. The mom finally gives in and buys her the toy- all of this is observed by the little boy.

 

Next time if the boy wants something, he will imitates the behavior from the girl: to scream and cry. This is a kind of social learning. However, if the mom didn’t buy in and refused the girl’s demand even if she cried and screamed, the boy won’t imitate the behavior since it did not lead to a desirable consequence.
