扫除托福阅读障碍——盘点托福阅读中的介词of

介词是英语中最为活跃的词类之一，在句子结构中占据着重要的地位。作为介词之一的of的在托福文章中使用频率也是极大的，其词义也最为丰富。笔者在托福长难句的教学中发现，很多学生对于如何理解含有of结构的词组和句子存在一定的障碍。本文就托福阅读中子为例，盘点出英语介词of的常见用法中的三种：表所属、表动宾、表数量。

1、 of 结构表示所属关系，在”A of B”的结构中，可以理解为“B的A”，相当于名词所有格的用法。

In the 1500s when the Spanish moved into what later was to become the southwestern United States，they encountered the ancestors of the modern day Pueblo，Hopi，and Zuni peoples.(所属关系)

16世纪，当西班牙人迁居后来的美国西南部地带时，他们遇到了今天皮艾布鲁人、霍皮人和祖尼人的祖先。

此处的the ancestors of the modern day Pueblo，Hopi，and Zuni peoples相当于the modern day Pueblo，Hopi，and Zuni peoples’ ancestors. 类似的例子如：In the seventeenth century the organ, the clavichord，and the harpsichord became the chief instruments of the keyboard group，a supremacy they maintained until the piano supplanted them at the end of the eighteenth century.

17世纪时风琴、敲弦琴和拨弦琴成为键盘乐器类的主要成员，这种至高无上的地位一直由它们保持，直到18世纪末被钢琴所取代。

2、 of 结构表示动宾关系，在”A of B”的结构中，A通常是具有动词性质的名词，同样可以理解为“B的A”，也可省略of不译。

Science is built with facts just as a house is built with bricks，but a collection of facts (动宾关系)cannot be called science any more than a pile of bricks can be called a house.

科学建立在事实上，就像房子用砖砌成一样。但事实的收集不能被叫做科学，就像一堆砖不能被称为房子一样。

此处的a collection of facts中的介词词组用来修饰由动词collect派生而来的名词collection, 构成一种动宾关系，理解为“事实的收集”。类似的例子还有：

Industrialization and the bureaucratization of economic life combined with a new emphasis upon credentials and expertise to make schooling increasingly important for economic and social mobility.

工业化和经济生活的官僚化，加上重新强调证书和专长，使得学校教育对经济和社会变动性越来越重要。

3、 of 结构表示数量、分量。这一类结构相对比较固定，基本上是一些固定词组，在理解此结构时，顺译即可。

But in the heyday of portrait painting--from the late eighteenth century until the 1850’s—anyone with a modicum of artistic ability could become a limner as such a portraitist was called.

但是在肖像画的全盛期——从18世纪晚期一直到19世纪50年代——任何一个稍有艺术能力的人都能够成为一个绘画者(人们当时就是这样称呼一个肖像画家的)。

此处的a modicum of artistic ability即表示一点点，少量的，用来修饰of后面的artistic ability。类似的例子，如The fact that half of the known species are thought to inhabit the world's rain forests does not seem surprising，considering the huge numbers of insects that comprise the bulk of the species.考虑到组成大部分物种的昆虫的巨大数量，认为半数的已知物种栖息在世界的雨林中这一事实看起来并不令人吃惊。

Of介词短语在托福阅读文章中极为常见，尽管结构上很简单，但在阅读和理解句子的过程中会给学生们带来不少的困惑。通过学习以上三种常见用法，相信同学们以后在遇到含有类似结构的句子时便可迎刃而解。
