　　1.ordinary

　　ordinary就是我们平常接触使用的表达普通的，一般都是指与一般事物的性质标准相同,强调平常而无高明奇特之处。用于物，指每天发生，十分平淡无奇，用于人，指无特别之处，很一般。

　　例如：

　　I strongly suspect that most ordinary people would agree with me.

　　They can abstract precious medicines from ordinary substances.

　　这个也是比较常见的普通，指因为人或者物所共同具有的的或使用而使之常见的，但一般多指物，侧重很常见，不稀奇。有时也可引申表示‘一般的’，‘平常的’，也是指普通，没有特别之处，但有时也会含有低劣粗俗的意思。

　　His name was Hansen, a common name in Norway.

　　Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way.

　　She thought he was very common and uneducated.

　　3.general

　　general在语气上比common强，侧重牵涉人人或绝大多数地方大多如此，很少有例外的情况。

　　例如：

　　The general practice in such cases is to apply for a court order.

　　The project should raise general awareness about bullying.

　　universal与general同义，但语气较强，侧重对每个人或事物都适用，根本没有例外。

　　例如：

　　How will they square that with their dedication to universal rights and human rights?

　　Perhaps the most universal dream of all is that disgraceful dream of appearing in public places and in society with very little or nothing on.

　　5monplace

　　这个是指人按照普通的，常见的观点思考问题或做事，强调的是缺乏新意。

　　例如：

　　That was once an implausible, distant, dream; now it's a reality so commonplace that we take it for granted.

　　It’s because that is one aspect of travel that I love, just feeling the difference in a new place until it becomes commonplace, if I stay long enough for that to happen.

　　6.usual

　　usual指正常的、通常发生的或期望发生的事物,或描述在特定情况下经常发生、经常进行或经常使用的事物。强调习惯性的,遵循常规的,不陌生的。

　　例如：

　　As usual there will be the local and regional elections on June the twelfth.

　　And as I said above, recognition is usually for doing something out of the ordinary and beyond your usual job or role.

　　7.popular

　　指适合一般人的爱好,需要或在一般人能理解的范围内所公认的或接受的,但是这个普通多暗含有贬义。

　　例如：

　　The measure falls in with popular demand.

　　He is the youngest of the clerks, and he comes on as the can-do guy, a style that is very popular around here.
