   Task 1

The table and the bar chart give the information about the UK cruise passengers in 1995 and 2003.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The table presents the total number of UK cruise passengers in 1995 and the number in 2003, and the bars illustrate a detailed comparison between the two years as the passengers are divided into six age groups.

First, far outnumbering the 339,575 passengers in 1995, the 1,053,367 passengers in 2003 were an enormous crowd. Second, passengers in 2003 show a numerical disadvantage only in the 25-34 group and the 35-44 group, where the numbers were 8, compared with 12, and 10, compared with 13. The advantage was most obvious among the youngest passengers, as there were 10 passengers in 2003 compared with 6 passengers in 1995. The gap was as insignificant as a mere 1 in the 45-54 group and the 55-64 group and was 3 in the oldest group. In addition, numerically, people the two oldest groups were more likely to take a cruise than did all younger people in both years, and both years witnessed the oldest group taking the marked lead.

Overall, the number of passengers clearly varied from group to group and from year to year.

  Task 2

Many museums charge for admission while others are free.

Do you think the advantages of charging people for admission to museums outweigh the disadvantages?

Commonly, visitors pay a fee to enter a museum. However, charging for admission is not a universal policy. In my opinion, the gains of charging the fee well offset the drawbacks.

Admittedly, where a ticket needs to be purchased, the price can be deterring for low-income people who however have the desire to learn art, history, and culture through the display. In this case, being able to visit a museum is a privilege, exclusively enjoyed by a certain population. This contradicts the purpose of museums, which is to foster the cultural, historical and aesthetic awareness of the whole population rather than that of some people.

However, there is a good intent behind the fee. As the charge discourages people whose visit depends on whether there is a fee, people who are willing to pay for their entry can enjoy a quiet and orderly environment. This aligns with the desired situation that the facility receives a reasonable number of patrons and serve them with high quality. Meanwhile, museums need the money, as it pays the museum’s staff and utility bills and pays for the regular maintenance and likely renovation. With the admission fee charged, a museum is financially capable of hiring an adequate number of qualified tour guides, and it also can be generous in installing reliable equipment and in maintaining and revamping buildings.

At this point, the advantages of an admission fee are crystal clear, although there are museums that offer free entry. The disadvantage of the fee, compared with the benefits, is marginal.
